I'm by no means a world traveler. In my short life span I've been to a few European countries, a few Asian countries and quite a bit of the USA and western Canada.

I bring this up to state as far as I'm concerned in relation to green spaces, Kaohsiung isn't very high on the list. To me, Berlin still had the most green spaces and parks I've ever seen in any city.

As for Kaohsiung, I do enjoy visiting the cultural center for a number of reasons.

First off, as far as actual performances go the auditorium is quite nice with (to my ears at least) good acoustics. Have seen several different shows there and enjoyed them all.

Despite the hideous (again, my .02) appearance of the external of the building, the surrounding areas are quite nice. Plenty of trees and flowers, and plenty of space to walk and enjoy the weather. When you actually get into the 'interior' you don't get too much street noise, which is a nice relief no matter which city you live in.

There is a decent ice cream place called "Big Tom" on the western side in a separate building.

Whether you're looking to see a show or just get some quiet time in a park setting, the cultural center is a good place to visit.

Not more than half a decade ago there was a concrete wall surrounding the entire length of this place. That wall has since been knocked down along with many more in Taiwan. Now people come here often in droves to get a massage, join an exercise routine, walk their dogs, sip coffee, or simply strole around the open grounds amid trimmed grass, trees and hedges - busiest times are in the evenings. The large and ominous building itself is now undergoing renovations but is often the venue for opera and other such concerts. You may even see students practicing a breakdance routine on its huge front steps.

A good spot for taking a stroll. There's lots of cafes in the area and other small eats. On Saturday nights, there is a hand-crafts market where artisans come to sell their goods.
